A Classification essay is written by organizing different categories on the basis of a single classification principle. The main aim is to categorize things so that they can further be discussed and more information can be collected for useful purposes. Classification essays are also used to make things clearer and avoid confusion when different set of things are explained without categorizing. It is one of most used type of essays in colleges and schools to increase the student's level of organization using different methods. Every classification essay should have a theme. Classification is a method used to group objects, study or observation according to their common factors. Mostly these essays use a hierarchy to sort things into an order according to their importance.

The benefits of classification essays are that a person who reads it can easily understand it and find categories that interest him. It makes the essay more interesting and easy to follow.

How to divide and write a classification essay?

There are three steps that are commonly used to write a classification essay.

Arrange things into logical categories

Arranging things requires research from a writer's end. Finding categories is the most important thing when developing a classification essay. What you can do is collect all the possible information on different things that have something in common depending on your thesis statement. You can find a lot of useful and useless information from this research. Collect the useful information keeping a single parameter in mind. If your categories have a single point in common and if it goes hand in hand with your thesis, you can even choose categories that vary hugely. It should also be noted that you should not leave a critical category away while looking for other categories. In order to avoid this deadly mistake, you must thoroughly research the topic before jumping into classification. If you are writing about various treatments for liver cancer and leave out chemotherapy, the entire research would seem to be improper. There should not be too many categories in a classification essay which can significantly decrease the value of every category included.

Single parameter for category determination

If you categorize your thing in the essay baseless, the entire essay can be messed up with a chunk of information without any correlation. The organizing principle should match your thesis statement and which should be the basis of all your categorizing efforts. When you classify things using a single parameter to be met, you should not let other parameters to affect your decision, which can result in unexpected categories. For example if you are writing an essay about different treatments for liver cancer, your basic unifying principle for classification should be different treatments for liver cancer not treatments for breast cancer or blood cancer.

Give proper importance to each category

Once you have developed and decided on categories, you need to provide them all enough importance according their priority, if not equal. The no. of examples given for each category should be similar and each should have the common categorizing factor included in it. Even though there are no rules to follow when prioritizing your categories when you write, it's a common practice to keep the most important one as the last category.

The classification essays also follows the same structure as in any other essay as introduction, body and conclusion. The categories normally fall in the body part of the essay. The introduction to a classification essay should provide the basic classifying principle and categories to make it easy for people to understand and generate interest.

The conclusion goes with the summary of the classified categories and how it supports your thesis statement.
